What to do on Father's Day from Due South

What to do on Father's Day

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and every year we find ourselves asking two crucial questions: What will I get him? And, what can we do together?

While finding the perfect gift is essential, Father’s Day is also about the moments you share and the memories you create. At Due South, we believe in cherishing these moments, and we’ve put together some fantastic ideas for experiences you can enjoy with the father figure in your life.

Sure, we could write an entire book about the variety of experiences to be had in Ireland, but today, we’re focusing on some of our absolute favourites. These activities not only bring you closer together but also allow you to immerse yourself in the stunning beauty of Ireland.

What to do on Father's Day

One of our top picks for a memorable day out in Ireland during the summer is hiking. Ireland boasts an array of spectacular hiking trails, and one of our favourite spots is Co Wicklow. Known as the “Garden of Ireland,” Wicklow is less than an hour’s drive from Dublin City and offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes you’ll ever see.

Imagine stepping into the Wicklow Hills, surrounded by carpets of moss in ancient forests, and feeling completely at one with nature. The air is fresh, the scenery is awe-inspiring, and every step brings a new sense of tranquillity. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely walk, Wicklow has something for everyone. And yes, you can even camp in Wicklow for a true wilderness adventure! Check out Hidden Valley in Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow.

Our Wicklow Hills and Sugar Loaf designs are inspired by this very experience. Our Go and Wander design is inspired by the mountains of Ireland and our constant desire to get out and explore them. When you wear our clothing, you’re not just putting on a piece of fabric; you’re wearing a piece of Ireland’s natural beauty, crafted sustainably and with love.

Maybe you’d like something a little bit more chilled than a hike. The Waterford Greenway stretches 46km along the old Waterford to Mallow railway line. You can rent bikes or walk as much or as little of the trail as you like with plenty of coffee shops for a pit stop along the way.

Another excellent choice is a picnic in Glenveagh National Park in Co. Donegal. This park is known for its breathtaking vistas, pristine lakes, and the enchanting Glenveagh Castle with its exotic walled gardens. It’s an ideal spot to celebrate Dad surrounded by stunning scenery and his favourite snacks.

So, what do you do if the weather is typically Irish, raining and cold? You could do something indoors. Every Sunday until 28th of September, Mountain View in Ballyhale, Co. Kilkenny hosts a market.

Mountain View Markets in Co. Kilkenny is an excellent destination for those who appreciate high-quality, sustainable food and artisanal products. Set in a picturesque old farmyard, the market offers a diverse range of items, each with a unique story, connecting visitors with local and international producers. Open every Sunday, it’s a vibrant hub for social interaction and sustainable practices. Whether you're looking to explore culinary delights or discover unique crafts, Mountain View Markets promises a fulfilling and engaging experience. You’ll find Due South there too so be sure to say hello if you visit.

And as a final suggestion for an indoor activity with Dad what about visiting Kilmainham Gaol Museum? Visiting Kilmainham Gaol is a memorable way to connect with Irish history and your family. The guided tour provides a poignant journey through the stories of those imprisoned there, from ordinary criminals to notable figures in the fight for independence. The gaol's rich history, including the 1916 Easter Rising and the Irish Civil War, makes for an educational and moving experience. With its well-preserved architecture and insightful exhibitions, Kilmainham Gaol offers a unique and meaningful outing that fathers and families will cherish.

Father's Day is a perfect opportunity to explore the diverse and beautiful landscapes of Ireland while creating lasting memories with your dad. Whatever you choose, these activities promise a day filled with adventure, relaxation, and quality time together.
